What does a Cessna 172 cost?

Typical asking prices run roughly $88,000–$118,000, depending most on year, engine time, and avionics. For a number tailored to a specific airplane, use the free Cessna 172 value calculator.

What to check before you buy
  • Engine time & compression, hours since overhaul drive both price and your next big bill.
  • Logs & damage history, complete logs and no damage protect resale.
  • Corrosion & AD compliance, especially on older airframes; get a pre-buy from a type-savvy mechanic.
  • Avionics & ADS-B, confirm it's equipped; upgrades are costly to add later.
  • Model-specific: Stock carbureted 172M/N-era Skyhawks typically run $110k–$140k. Earlier straight-tail and round-tail models (1956–67, pre-Skyhawk-badge and early Skyhawk) trade in a distinctly cheaper stock market, commonly $45k–$95k depending on year and hours, a 1958 172 and a 1975 172M are not the same buyer's plane. 180hp conversions (Air Plains, Avcon) push to $160k–$185k. Retractable-gear Cutlass RG or 210hp Hawk XP/R172 models we've seen listed mostly land $85k–$100k for higher-time examples, though well-optioned, lower-time RGs can run notably higher. Modern fuel-injected 172S/SP with a G1000 glass panel is a different market entirely, commonly $230k up to $500k+ for very low-time examples.
